Exhaling fully tells the nervous system that there’s too much carbon dioxide and that there’s too little oxygen. It’s a nice metaphor for other aspects of our lives. What’s building up in our lives that needs to go away, to make space for something fresh?
Sometimes we need a pause—even a micro-pause—to consider what we really want to do or say. Other times, we need a pause just to rest.
Sometimes you gotta just practice what you preach. Every time I teach a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson, there are instructions to pause in between movements. Sometimes short pauses; sometimes long pauses. Sometimes lots of pauses; sometimes few pauses.
We pay attention to the movements, but it’s not just about the movement. It’s also about the way we change, the new ways we see ourselves and what’s possible.
