There’s a lot of darkness in our world. Pain, suffering, wrong-doing. We need the counterbalance of light.
We humans have an extraordinary proportion of our brain power allocated to our hands. Maybe that’s why making—using our hands to transform materials—is not only satisfying, but essential to who we are.
Some days you just gotta play. Make something out of a few simple materials. Maybe with unfamiliar materials and something you’ve never done before.
I wonder if we might find a way to celebrate the wrinkles in our lives, even the wrinkles on our faces. They’re evidence of the nature of living. And living is worth celebrating.
For millions of years, we humans have been making things with our hands. We transform materials to make objects that are functional and often beautiful. There’s something magical about the process. But it’s not just magical; it’s also essential to our well being. The things we make with our hands clothe us, feed us and shelter us.
Pairing some wool fiber and a beach ball is an odd choice. Odd, but fun. Who would have guessed how much fun you can have indoors with a ball, some soapy water, and a pile of colorful wool?
I’ve been running a little experiment lately. After reading about mastery and taking a couple of drawing classes, I still don’t like the way I draw. Reading about mastery did nothing for my drawing, but it did encourage practicing. So, I’ve been practicing.
