Rearranging Stuff

Dear Reader,
I rearranged a few things in my house recently. Not furniture. Little things. Stuff that was in drawers and cabinets. I even got rid of some stuff. And I kept a lot of stuff. What amazed me was that what remained was so hard to fit back into the original spaces.
How could that be? I really did throw away a lot—and set aside a lot to give away. And yet, what remained didn’t fit so well into the spaces I’d cleared out. Clearly, I should let go of more stuff.
While I’m pondering that, I’m still wondering how it all fit before.
Maybe life is like that. As we grow, some of our old ideas and habits just don’t fit any more. It can be scary to let go. It can also be prudent to develop new ideas and habits to fulfill the functions of the things we’re clearing out.
And sometimes we’ve just outgrown the need. What worked before, what we needed earlier, just isn’t the same now.
We might just need to allow some empty space—and empty time—to see what emerges. This is not an easy lesson for me, but I’m beginning to feel that I breathe differently when there’s more space.
Here’s what’s still on my calendar:
Our Tuesday online Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson is still Free/Pay as You Wish. By the way, it’s gentle, easy movements. You start with lying on your back, do some simple movements and take rests along the way. Participants report that it’s relaxing, helpful, restorative.
About three times a year, I’ve been teaching felt-making workshops and Feldenkrais Mini-Retreats at the Jung Center of Houston. More details:
Felting a New Story is Friday afternoon, July 18.
Unlock Your Neck and Shoulders is Friday afternoon, July 25.
