Pay Attention

Dear Reader,

Pay attention. It seems to have been Moshe Feldenkrais’s favorite phrase. It’s certainly one of the most common phrases he used in 100s of Awareness Through Movement lessons. It turns out that in Hebrew, which was the original language for these lessons, “Pay attention.” has special significance. It conveys the idea that you should pay attention with your whole heart, with your whole being.

Bring our whole self to the movement, the activity, the moment. What might be possible with this idea of paying attention with the whole self?

Maybe we “let go” or rest a little more deeply. Perhaps we notice more details about our bodies and how we tend to move—or how we think about moving. Perhaps we learn something new. It might just be restorative, or healing—healing as in the sense of making whole. Moving toward our full human potential.

Another phrase Feldenkrais used a lot—and one of my absolute favorites—is “Please lie on your back.” So many lessons begin with that simple instruction. It’s a great place to start. Lie on your back and pay attention.

If you’d like to check out this sort of experience, please join me in an upcoming class.

Tuesdays at 11:30 (Central time, US and Canada) we have Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons, and they’re still Free Pay As You Wish.

For the first time in quite a while, we have a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement workshop that will be available in person! It’s Ankles, Knees and Hips, Tuesday evening, June 14 at the Jung Center of Houston. If you prefer, you can register to attend online.

I’m also offering private sessions, both in person and online. If you’d like more information, please contact me and we can set up a time to talk.
