Light and Dark

Dear Reader,
The days are getting shorter, y’all—unless you happen to be in the Southern Hemisphere. In a little over a week, we’ll arrive at the shortest day of the year. Here in my part of Texas, we’ve had some days of gloriously sunny weather. It was even cool enough for me to wear a hand knit sweater. (Mind you, it doesn’t have to be all that cold for me to wear a sweater, but you get the idea.)
This time of year is such an interesting mix. The holiday season arrives with invitations—commercial and personal—to celebrate, to share, to enjoy. It can also be a time of real loss. Sometimes it’s a recent, personal loss; sometimes it’s a reminder of those who’ve passed away long ago. It’s a dark season. No wonder we’ve developed traditions of lighting candles, trees, whole neighborhoods.
There’s a Feldenkrais lesson that has “Havdalah blessing” in the title. Oddly enough, it’s a lesson focused on moving the legs in a particular way, but the Havdalah blessing is a reference to a specific gesture of moving the hand over a candle. My understanding is that the gesture calls attention to the separation between light and darkness. And perhaps there are moments where the light almost shines through the fingers.
Whatever season this is for you, I hope that you’ll continue to find light shining in the darkness, to experience peace and love, and moments of real joy.
This year, we have two more weeks of our Tuesday online Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement class. No class on December 26 or January 2. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Yep, it’s almost 2024.
And just for fun, we’ll have an in-person Felting Magic class on Saturday morning, December 16, at Kani Kettu | Nordic Yarn. We’ll be making tiny felt vessels, just right for holding small treasures, or big ideas.

May peace be with you!
