Fixing Things

Dear Reader,
Y’all probably know that I like to knit. Mostly, it’s fun and relaxing—and rewarding. But knitting as a craft has a distinct disadvantage. You can knit and knit and make all kinds of progress. Then, when you sit back and examine what you’ve done, you might just spot a mistake. Ugh.
In knitting, if the mistake happened a while back, you either have to undo what you’ve done all the way back to the problem spot—or, you do what feels a bit like surgery. You put some of the stitches on holders. You undo the “wrong” column—all the way down to the mistake—and carefully redo those stitches with some crazy looking strands of yarn.
It’s a bit of a dilemma. Would I even notice the mistake once the whole project is complete? Maybe yes; maybe no. Should I ignore it and go on as if nothing happened? Maybe not. I’d spend the rest of the knitting time wondering if it was going to bother me.
The other dilemma is whether to unravel all the stitches, or do the surgical procedure on just the problem column. On this particular project, I decided for the latter. A bit challenging, and I made another mistake which needed correcting—but that one was easy enough to fix.
I’m glad I did. I learned that I really do know how to fix this kind of mistake. And, happily, one of my favorite knitting friends, declared it “excellent work.” High praise from one of the best knitters I know. She also reminded me, “We can do hard things!”
It’s good to know that we can go back and correct a mistake. It’s good to know that we can do hard things. And then we can get back to the fun stuff.
Fun stuff ahead:
