Empty Spaces

Dear Reader,
One of my themes for this year has been making space. It’s not easy though. I wonder if I’m just making space to fill it up again. What’s wrong with that picture?
And then there’s making space in my days—allowing time to just be. To wander. To sit on the porch and watch the birds.
Lately I’ve been thinking about making space in my mind. Space for different ideas, different stories. Maybe some of my old ideas, standards, and stories aren’t so useful any more. Maybe, just maybe, if I give my mind enough space, I can think about old stories in new ways. Stories about myself, other people, and what’s right and wrong.
Some of the old stories are tried and true—and still useful. Some of the old stories just don’t work any more. The ones that point fingers, declare who’s right and wrong, make harsh judgements—those are starting to look more harmful than helpful.
Zen master, Barbara Rhodes suggests the following meditation: breathe in with the words “Clear Mind”, breathe out with the words “Don’t Know.” A nice way to let old ideas drift away, and over time—perhaps just moments—the empty space allows for something fresh—and spacious—to emerge.
Happily, I still have space for Feldenkrais, coaching, and felt-making.
Our weekly online Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson is on Tuesdays, and it’s still Free/Pay as You Wish.
If you’d like to work with me privately, you can Book an Appointment, or reply to this email and let me know what interests you.
Mark your calendars for two in-person classes at the Jung Center of Houston: a felting workshop on Friday afternoon, July 18; and a Feldenkrais Mini-retreat on Friday afternoon, July 25. I’ll post more details soon.
Have all the fun you can.
