This or That?

Dear Reader,

Choices. We have so many. What to do? What to do?

Near the end of her life, my mother-in-law had dementia. She wasn’t quite herself anymore. I asked her about a particular preference,”Would you like this or that?” Her reply was simple. “What difference does it make?”

On the surface, it seemed like a simple expression of apathy or perhaps even depression. A bit deeper, and the response had a message I still hear today. Really. What difference does it make? There are some fundamental things in life that keep on going, regardless of what I do. So far anyway, the earth spins on its axis, and the sun comes up and goes down every day. Death and taxes. You know.

What difference does it make if I do this or that? I don’t always have an answer to that question. But I do know that many people have made a difference in my life. A word of kindness. A word of reflection. A recognition of who I am. Encouragement. Acceptance. Wisdom.

It makes a difference how we respond to one another. No matter how it looks on the outside, each of us has difficulties and struggles—and gifts to share. Kindness makes a difference. It makes it easier to take another step forward, to breathe a little deeper, to rest a little more easily.

Take a moment here and there to offer kindness to yourself and others. It makes a difference.

Move your body every day. Have a conversation and really listen. Make something.
