Steep Curve Ahead

Dear Reader,

The steep curve ahead happens to be the learning curve—at least for me these days. I’m working on a project that means a lot to me, and it has a deadline. And, the project necessitates knowledge and a skill set that I find rather intimidating.

So, I’m learning some of those skills and techniques, and I’m also learning a lot about myself. Or perhaps more accurately, I’m discovering the depth of things I already knew about myself.

As with many projects, this is one that requires a step by step process. One of the challenges is that the steps aren’t entirely clear until you get to them. From the outside looking in, it appears that some people can pick a project, visualize the outcome, and just start taking each of the appropriate steps. I envy those people—whether they actually exist or not.

On the other hand, there are moments in my process that are absolutely delightful. Something works well. Resources are already on hand or magically appear. Best of all, a new idea might suddenly occur that soon seems obvious. How did I not know or see that before? It’s so clear now, that I can’t imagine ever not seeing it.

Through the Feldenkrais Method, I’ve learned things about how we move, that seem so obvious now. How could I not have known these things before? Here’s an example. Did you know that the shoulder blade is connected to the upper arm bone and the collar bone? But it doesn’t share a joint with any of the ribs or vertebrae—even for recreational purposes. (I didn’t intend that pun, but there you go.)

But most of us move as if the shoulder blade was locked onto the ribs or spine. Actually, it can slide up and down and left and right, more or less gliding along the ribs of the upper back. And, just visualizing that can help us to move our shoulders more easily. They don’t really have to carry the weight of the world.

Step by step, bit by bit, we can keep on learning and moving—perhaps even more easily and gracefully.

I’d love for you to join me along this learning journey. It’s not always steep or curvy, but there are definitely some delightful moments.
