Connecting the Dots

Dear Reader,

Finding patterns has a number of different meanings in my life. As a sewer and a knitter, I use patterns as guides along the way. Sometimes I’m searching the internet for new patterns, and sometimes I’m trying to find an old pattern that I’m sure is around here somewhere.

Studying the Feldenkrais Method is another exercise in uncovering patterns. Patterns of movement, patterns of habit, common patterns of organizing posture and movement. When we recognize the patterns, we have new options for movement.

In coaching, we look for patterns in our lives. Sometimes those patterns are useful, and we want to extend them, or perhaps expand their usefulness. Other times, their results aren’t so helpful and we want to disrupt the pattern. Again, when we gain clarity about those patterns, we have new options for movement in our lives.

My friend, Kathleen, could always spot four-leaf clovers with ease. She said it’s noticing where something stands out, not part of the usual pattern. My friend, Will, is amazing at spotting visual patterns. It’s important in his photography and in his teaching. Where do you notice patterns?

Our brains work in amazing ways. We learn through patterns, we follow patterns, we create patterns, and sometimes we disrupt patterns. One of my favorite things is the expansion that happens, the lives that improve, when we activate this kind of learning.

As you might have guessed by now, I particularly like using Feldenkrais, Coaching and Felt-making to instigate these kinds of changes. I hope you’ll join me soon in some of these explorations. Here’s what’s on the calendar.

If you’re intrigued by the “wool and a beach ball” idea, I’d love for you to join me at the Jung Center of Houston on Saturday afternoon, June 22. It’s fun, magical, and no talent or experience is required. Making Space: Felting Around a Ball is an in-person workshop.

If you’d like to explore how movement or conversation can change—meaning improve—your life, check out these possibilities:

Our weekly online Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson is Free/Pay as You Wish, and it’s an easy, gentle way to get moving.

Again, at the Jung Center of Houston, we’ll spend a Saturday afternoon exploring movement. Finding Your Footing: a Feldenkrais Mini-retreat is another in-person experience—on June 22.

If you’re curious about working with me privately, Book an Appointment or reply to this email and we’ll get started.
