Setting Priorities

Dear Reader,

Idea maps, sometimes called brain maps, are a great way to put some emerging ideas on paper. You pick a topic or question, put it in the center of the page, and keep writing new words on tangential lines. It’s different from list making. It’s less linear, and more free association. Often, new ideas or thoughts emerge in the process.

It’s a great tool. One possibility is that you can start to see priorities. You can put more lines and words in certain areas. Or you can make some of the words bold—by color or size.

Sometimes, when you step back and look at the idea map, you begin to see the whole picture differently.

I was sharing one of my idea maps with a friend, and she noticed that nothing stood out. Each line and word had the same weight or value. Hmmm.

Another friend of mine once said that all the colors are her favorite color. i’m inclined to agree with her.

Bottom line: i just don’t always like to choose. Sometimes because I can go either way. Sometimes because I want to have my cake and eat it too.

Other times, when I’m pushed toward a choice, it suddenly clarifies what I really want. Other times, I work hard to figure out how to go multiple directions at once—in other words, not really setting a priority.

In reality, I do have values and priorities. And I love having variety and multiple possibilities.

Maybe that’s why I like the work that I do. In a nutshell, I help people discover possibilities they didn’t know were available to them. And usually they find their values and priorities are clarified along the way.
