Finding Space

July 27, 2026/in Awareness Through Movement, Feldenkrais Method, Weekly Newsletter /by Gika Rector

Dear Reader,

The MRI showed a mess. The report mentioned bone on bone, tendons, frazzled, jargon. But somehow, somewhere in the middle of a Feldnkrais lesson, space was found. The bones didn’t feel jammed up against each other. The muscles relaxed. Pain was diminished.

Maybe there was still a mess inside, but there was also space. Space to move. Space to breathe. Space to be.

I’ve been thinking about making space in my own life. Space to move. Space to create stuff. Space to just be.

The tricky thing for me is noticing the stuff that blocks the feeling of spaciousness. Maybe it’s tight muscles; or forgetting to breathe; or holding onto things that no longer serve. And those things could include good stuff, valuable stuff, ideas, habits, attitudes.

Sometimes I need to think about something a long time before I take action. This is certainly true when it comes to letting go. But, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of letting go, in order to make space. Space to breathe. Space to be. Space that’s open to new possibilities—maybe even possibilities that have never occurred to me. Or maybe just open space, kind of like the sky.

One of the things I love about learning from the Feldenkrais Method is that what we become aware of in our bodies and our movements, translates—or generalizes—into many areas of our lives. Our physical movements become easier, more fluid, more efficient—and our lives become more resilient. More resilient—not perfect, not pain free, not always ideal—with greater equanimity, grace and peace.

Space to be no matter what comes our way.

Speaking of space, we have about three more weeks on the calendar before we resume our weekly online Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons. Our next session will be on Tuesday, August 18. And it’s still Free/Pay as You Wish.

And, I’ve kept some open spaces on my calendar for private sessions. If you’re interested in working with me one-to-one, you can Book an Appointment for a free zoom consult. We can work via Feldenkrais, coaching or felt-making—any or all of these. You can also just reply to this email and let me know what you’re interested in.

Look for the spaces—and have all the fun you can!
