Because Art Matters

Dear Reader,

Built on the premise that art matters, The Woodlands Arts Council presented its 18th annual arts festival this past weekend. Arriving from near and far, 200 artists set up white tents and filled them with all kinds of art—jewlery, ceramics, wood, photography, metal, and fiber, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional. It was a feast for the eyes—and for the other senses as well.

But what makes it matter? Since before recorded history, humans have been embellishing. Caves were painted, fibers were dyed, vessels were decorated, sounds were strung together to make songs. Among other things, art brings pleasure. Sometimes it adds meaning, and sometimes it gives us a different perspective on our lives.

How does art fit into your life? Whether you consider yourself to be an artist or not, I can gaurantee that you exercise creativity in what you do. How do you open yourself up to creative expression? What would be different in your life if you were never allowed to be creative, or to enjoy the creativity of others? Where and how do you find beauty around you?
