Dark and Light

Dear Reader,
And out of the darkness there came a great light. I don’t know where that sentence comes from, but there’s something to it. Oddly enough, when it’s very very dark, it doesn’t take much light to fill the space.
Twinkle lights, candlelight, moonlight—they’re all especially welcome this time of year. So, I was delighted when I came across Fiona Duthie’s online class for making felt luminaires. I didn’t really need another class. And I had some pretty good guesses about how she approached this project. Nonetheless, I liked the look of the felt luminaries, I’d toyed with the idea of making felt lampshades, and I was curious about some of the details of her project.
So, with a little encouragement from a good friend, I signed up for the class. And yesterday, I made a felt luminary. It’s been a while since I made any felt just for the sake of making felt. So it was such a pleasure to get out the wool and watch the transformation.
It was also nice to take time to do something just because I wanted to. And it came out okay. And the light worked, and you can really see the light coming through the felt. When it’s not illuminated, it just looks mostly white—you might not expect light to come through. But it does.
I saw some grim news headlines today. There’s a lot of darkness in our world. Pain, suffering, wrong-doing. We need the counterbalance of light. And the darkness, in some mysterious way, helps us to see and appreciate the light.
Thanks to each of you for the many ways in which you bring light into the world. Keep on shining!
Upcoming:
Our Tuesday online Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson is happening tomorrow and almost every Tuesday. Tomorrow is December 16, which happens to be Beethoven’s birthday—and my late mother-in-law’s birthday. Two great lights in the world.
I’m slowing down a bit over the holiday, but if you’d like to work with me privately, you can Book an Appointment or reply to this email. We can talk about Feldenkrais, coaching, felt-making—all ways that I might help you brighten up your world.
My next Feldenkrais mini-retreat is next year, Saturday, February 28, at the Jung Center of Houston. Registration is open: Lift Your Heart: A Feldenkrais Mini-retreat.
Thanks for being here! And, have all the fun you can!
