Balance statue

We often speak of balance as if it were a static thing. For humans, balance is a verb. Structurally, we humans are inverted pyramids. We stand and walk on two feet, but we’re much heavier and broader at our pelvis and shoulders. Even when we stand perfectly—or almost perfectly—still, we use tiny movements to keep us upright. All this means that we are built for movement. And finding balance is a moving target.

Improving balance might well start with the feet. With 26 bones and 33 joints in each foot, there are lots of possible movements. Yet we move as if our feet were like boxes, usually enclosed in “supportive” shoes. “Supportive” also means constrained. And constrained means that we often forget how much our feet can articulate and support us in a multitude of upright positions. Each foot also has thousands of nerve endings. When the feet are alive and active, they send feedback to the brain that lets us know where we are in space and how to keep moving—and balancing.

This four-week series of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lessons will help participants rediscover the magic of sitting, standing, and moving upright in gravity. Finding balance may be a moving target, but it’s also something that can be endlessly improved. You might even find greater ease in balancing other aspects of your life.
